To be honest, I don't know why I bothered looking for you. I thought I'd have a better excuse by now. But I think I wanted to know if you found what you were training for. You were working pretty hard at something.
[Matching curiosity.]
rgkijk i went on a long hiatus i'm sorry this is 20 years late but i'm down to continue if you are!!
ha. i've wondered about you before too. sometimes strangers stick out in your mind...
[ The candor of admitting he doesn't know why he's reaching out at all is the kind of transparency Zuko likes in someone. That awkward admission actually cracks the shell — melts some ice. He'd rather this guy talk straight, even if he's uncomfortable and uncertain, than try and bull shit to be friendly. Who knows — Zuko's always a firm believer in destiny. He's never seen someone with a scar that looks like his own; of course he's wondered about this guy, too, on occasion. There was something there, vague and odd. He gets it.
He's more willing to carry on the conversation, picking up his end of it better now... ]
i've improved my fire magic a lot. it's not to the level i was capable of back home still. i could not wield the other elements back home, so i was very focused when we met on regaining my native element. we call it bending where i'm from. i'm a firebender. but i've improved the other elements here now as well, which has been rewarding. i started going to school and i train with my friends from home now, who all also have elemental magic. it's helped a lot.
[He hasn't expected this. Though this is more, somehow—better. Zuko's remembered him, apparently. Though Shoto's thoughts found him too, here: another boy who's held flames before, wearing the same sort of scarring.
Saying he's lost something precious. Finding it differently.
He's shocked he's answered.]
I lost mine too.
My Quirk, I mean. The fire half.
I'm not a bender, though.
[Ah. Stupid... he's all worked up. He hasn't explained himself well!]
I guess you could say I was split before. Between my fire and my ice halves.
But we'd been calling them our "Quirks", back then. Our different abilities. Though we can use all types of magics here.
[No more limiters.]
I guess this means you're Elemental now.
I didn't think you'd give up, though. I think I was counting on that.

My name's Todoroki.
I don't what you'll remember, but we met at the training grounds.
I'm the one that interrupted you.
With the burn.
[If he remembers at all.]

[ Zuko’s curiosity is piqued, though he’s always cautious. ]

Of course!! Climbing my way back, too...

Looks like it paid off.

You mean Midoriya?
We've been friends.
[It's insufficient: "friends". He owes him so much...]
He's pretty strong too, right?
Even without his Quirk, I'd think. He's probably finding his way just fine.
He's never given up on anything.
[Not even Shoto.]
But that's how he is.
I wasn't interested in flames before, since I was normally holding back.
It's thanks to him I could use mine, though everything's different now.
[Their being "borrowed", he means.]
Was it easy for you, before?
Using your flames?
